Q&A: Gilbert Zubiate's Impressive Tenure with Behr

Early on in his career, Gilbert Zubiate was given the opportunity to work directly with a chemist as a milling operator at a family-owned paint company. This experience grew his passion to explore the values of architectural chemistry. Gilbert joined Behr Paint Company in 2003, and after four years in Quality Control for three manufacturing facilities in Southern California, he transferred to the Research and Development team.

What does a typical day as a color lab chemist look like?

A typical day would be color formulating and preparing several drawdowns of product. All color formulas must meet specifications, so each panel is measured verses a standard. Corrections are necessary when results are not correct, this process continues until each panel passes.

I also help prepare color formulations, applications, and evaluate and collect data to supply feedback for our products. I provide technical guidance internally and externally with our suppliers and prepare weathering studies for evaluating color retention (fading).

How do you believe your role helps the company continuously improve?

I consistently use internal and external customer feedback to drive improvement and support positive values such as cooperation and truthfulness. With a strong focus on training and education, I always want to be helpful and provide technical guidance and direction to my colleagues.

What do you love most about your job?

"I’m very proud to work for a brand that is so highly recognized and praised."

The people I work with are full of talent and creativity. Over the years, I’ve built many meaningful relationships throughout the company. On many social occasions when my occupation is mentioned, the response is always positive. I’m very proud to work for a brand that is so highly recognized and praised.
